Transportation

Iran has an extensive transportation system with vast and effective road, rail, and air transportation networks which connect every point of the country to the rest, and to the borders and beyond. It also has fully equipped ports both on the Caspian Sea and, particularly, on the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman which link the country to the rest of the world.
In 1998, Iran had more than 111,000 km of roadway of which 890 km consisted of freeways, 2,738 km of four-lane highways, 3,674 km of wide main roads, 18,526 km of ordinary main roads and the rest was secondary and spur asphalted roads. Also, there were 88,228 km of rural roads.

There are bus services in Iran that connect every town and village of Iran to the rest of the country, particularly to Tehran, where there are three main bus terminals. Gharb (West) Terminal, is close to Mehrabad International Airport and Azadi Square. From there those who intend to travel to the north and west of Iran begin their journeys. Those who wish to go southwards or to travel to the central parts of Iran, must take buses at the Jonoob (South) Terminal, and anyone wishing to visit the eastern parts of the country must begin their journeys the Shargh (East) Terminal. Buses also begin journeys to Turkey, Syria and Armenia starting from the same terminals. These terminals provide adequate services for the passengers including restaurants, coffee shops, taxis, handicraft store, etc.
Most buses are operated as cooperative companies formed of a number of independent drivers/bus owners.
The telephone numbers of these terminals are the followings:
