Khuzestan 
The province of Khuzestan is situated in the southwest of Iran, and covers an area of 63,238 sq. km. The various townships of the said province are as follows: Abadan, Andimeshk, Omidiyeh, Ahvaz, Eazeh, Baq-e-Malek, Mah Shahr, Behbahan, Khoram Shahr, Dezful, Dasht-e-Azadegan, Ramhormoz, Shadegan, Shoosh, Shooshtar and Masjed Soleiman. According to the census in the year 1996, the province had a population of 3.7 million, of which approximately 62.5 % were in the urban areas, 36.5 % were rural dwellers and 1% of the remaining were non-residents
The province of Khuzestan can be basically divided into two regions,i.e., the plains and mountainous regions. The former being in the south and west of the province. The same being the alluvial plains, that are irrigated by Karoon, Karkheh and Jarahi Rivers . Whereas the mountainous regions are situated to the north and east of the province, and are considered to be a part of southern regions of the Zagross Mountain Ranges.
Abadan
Abadan with a 2796 sq.km. area is situated on Arvand River delta.The two rivers of karoun and Bahmanshir are on the northern part of the city ,arvand river on the western side and the persian Gulf on the southern sector of the city.The city is situated on the latitude of 31.21 north and longitude of 48.17 east of greenwich.It is 11 meters above sea level.
Hictorical Background
The Abadan port city or island is referd to as Ebadan in ancient texts and in recent centuries AL-khazar or green island.Ebadan was taken after the name of Ebadan AL-haseen,wholived in the island under the rule of Abdul Malek of Umayyadi (661-750 AD). He was the first to make a reference to the island.The famous Iranian writer,Naser khosrow,who was found of travelling,after visiting the city,writes in 1018: We arrived in Ebadan and disembarked the ship,it is located by sea and is like an island in which river has become two-pronged at the point before joining the point before joining the sea.
Moghaddasi writes:it is situated on the banks of river karoun and is 20 kms.off the persian Gulf coasts.It is the only city in the area and there is no other town in sight.All there is ,is water.Its ancient history aside,the present-day Abadan,built near the old city ,gained a vital importance with discovery of massive oil reserves.After oil was pumped from the first discovered oil well in Masjed Soleyman,construction of Abadan oil Refinery started.Discovery of every additional oil well in the oil rich region,inceased the importance of Abadan and its economic,industrial and international significance.
